What Is Yantra ?

Yantra is the Tantric Symbol of Cosmic Unity and essential in Tantra Yoga practices.

Sanskrit word Yantra is defined in many ways :

It comes from the root "YAM" which means "support or hold." To hold is to obtain, to keep, or to maintain the essence of an object, a thought, or a concept. In a more general way, YANTRA means "tool”. "YAM" is also energy, medium. Which makes Yantra a “storehouse for energy”.

The syllable TRA comes from TRANA or “liberation from bondage.” So Yantra is that which preserves the essence and liberates !!

The word YAM also means Yama, the Lord of Death, and TRA means attaining trana, or freedom, then yantra is that which gives liberation from the cycle of birth and death -  moksha (liberation).

Yantra is used to get in contact with the energy patterns associated with certain intentions and contemplation states - as a symbolic representation of a particular experience or energy which relates to a particular state of higher awareness. This makes Yantra a reflection of the Divine.

Yantra is a geometric design or painting for visual meditation. It is also a visual representation of vibrational frequencies - is the sound vibration of the cosmic Om seen as a visual diagram.

Though two dimensional, Yantras are conceived of as having depth and full dimension. Yantras may be drawn or painted on any material, out of any substance. There is no parallel for the term in English but Yantra may be summarized as a two-dimensional diagram in which visualized energies are concentrated or simply a field of energy. With its mantra a Yantra is a complex of stored imagery of sight and sound and psychic and mystical content.
